Fair punishment

A few nights ago the local news aired a clip of a few high school kids forced to run laps while holding hands after they were caught fighting during practice. Apparently after a video of the incident got out they said the coach went too far with the punishment, and that the parents were “shocked” at the video. Personally, I think the kids got off pretty easy. Some of the people they interviewed during the segment suggested they should have gotten detention or been suspended for some games. First off, detention is probably not going to teach the kids anything, and suspending them from a few games is essentially punishing the entire team for the actions of two individuals. The punishment they got seemed perfectly fair and was probably just as effective as anything else the coach could have done. If the kids don’t want to feel “uncomfortable” (as the news put it), then they shouldn’t have been fighting.
