On Boots

Some of you may know that I frequently like to take off on some fairly long walks around town. On days when it’s nice outside (such as today), I may put in 10-15 miles or more. During the course of such a walk today, the sole of my right boot proceeded to detach itself from the rest of my boot. After a few failed attempts at wrapping the laces around the sole for a temporary fix, I was obligated to walk the rest of the way home without it.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a shoe fail like this, and I believe it is due to the glue they use to attach the outsoles in virtually every shoe you see these days. I just didn’t expect it happen to a pair of decent Italian-made hiking shoes. For my next shoe purchase I am going to try and find something with a good old fashioned Goodyear or Norwegian welt, which I think in the long run will be worth the little bit more I will probably have to pay.
